Ephesus: an ancient city in 360 degrees

Some places deserve to be explorable from anywhere on earth. In 2017, 360virtualtour.net produced a 360 virtual tour of Ephesus — the ancient city near Izmir, among the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean — combining ground-level panoramas along its marble streets with aerial panoramas that reveal the site's full layout.

Ephesus needs little introduction: a Greco-Roman metropolis whose library facade, great theatre and colonnaded streets have drawn visitors for generations. A virtual tour cannot replace standing there, but it can do two things a visit cannot: show the whole site from the air, and let anyone on the planet walk its streets at any time.

Scope of the shoot

We captured the site as a route of connected panoramic scenes following the ancient street grid, with camera positions chosen to present the monuments at their strongest — the scale of the theatre, the detail of the carved stonework, the long perspectives down the marble roads.

The aerial component added drone panoramas above the complex, placing the ruins in their landscape and making the city's plan readable at a glance. Archaeological sites are unforgiving shooting environments: hard sunlight, pale stone, deep shadow in the same frame. HDR bracketing throughout kept the stonework's texture visible in both extremes.
